2012 MACA Conference September 23-24

Submitted by Al Nicolai on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 8:04am

The annual MACA Conference will happen on September 23-24, 2012, in Columbia. All coaches and sponsors (especially new coaches and sponsors!)are encouraged to attend. The Missouri State High School Activities Association will tentatively “host,” providing conference and breakout rooms for the Monday sessions, thanks to the generous intercession of MSHSAA Associate Executive Director Stacy Schroeder. That means that planning for next year begins, and the window of opportunity opens for volunteers who have new ideas (or even old ones) for presenting breakout sessions.

The annual conference of the Missouri Academic Coaches Association—also known as “The First-Ever Second Annual Brainstorm at the Lake”—took place on Sept. 25-26, 2011, at Osage Beach, Missouri. The free exchange of ideas, information and opinions scored a success with attendees from across the state (except for that one grouchy guy—you know the one I mean.)

MACA Officer Positions Open

Submitted by Al Nicolai on Mon, 08/22/2011 - 12:05pm

Word spreads that the current president will not run for re-election at the MACA convention in September at the Inn at Grand Glaize. In addition, the vice-president, "The" Bob Brown, announced in the spring his intention to retire from coaching after a remarkable career at Richland. The MACA treasurer position has remained unfilled for almost a year, with Bob and president Al Nicolai swapping acting treasurer responsibilities. The election of new officers, then, will reign as a priority for the business meeting.

The enthusiastic gang at the Missouri Quiz Bowl Association have volunteered, in the person of Charlie Dees, to direct a session at the September 26 MACA Convention entitled "Pyramidal and NAQT Questions in Missouri Explained." As envisioned, the presentation would be "intended to be an explanation of pyramidal quizbowl and the new pyramidal circuit that has emerged locally over the last few years, and how it relates to the new NAQT-written MSHSAA tournament which uses a large (number) of pyramidal questions." This should be a hot-button topic, with talk of shifting the format of the jv stat

Coach of the Year awards went to four top coaches, and member-emeritus Troy Kinast won the Carol Farmer Founders Award. One karma-charmed member won a new ZeeCraft buzzer system, donated by the ZeeCraft people.
