The MACA lame-duck president has been nudged by an attentive member to put more comprehensive convention news here at the website, so here's some. Convention fees will stay at last year's rate of $25. MACA membership fees also remain consistent at $25, with a bargain rate of $15 for additional coaches or members from the same school.
Word spreads that the current president will not run for re-election at the MACA convention in September at the Inn at Grand Glaize. In addition, the vice-president, "The" Bob Brown, announced in the spring his intention to retire from coaching after a remarkable career at Richland. The MACA treasurer position has remained unfilled for almost a year, with Bob and president Al Nicolai swapping acting treasurer responsibilities. The election of new officers, then, will reign as a priority for the business meeting.
The enthusiastic gang at the Missouri Quiz Bowl Association have volunteered, in the person of Charlie Dees, to direct a session at the September 26 MACA Convention entitled "Pyramidal and NAQT Questions in Missouri Explained." As envisioned, the presentation would be "intended to be an explanation of pyramidal quizbowl and the new pyramidal circuit that has emerged locally over the last few years, and how it relates to the new NAQT-written MSHSAA tournament which uses a large (number) of pyramidal questions." The De Smet J.V. Invitational tournament will be held at De Smet Jesuit High School on Feb 5, 2011. The field will be limited to 24 teams, additional teams per school allowed on first come basis.. J.V. is defined as only Freshmen or Sophomores. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the coaches meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. Please enter the school by way of the commons door on the Emerson Rd (Highway 270) side of the school. All teams are requested to bring a buzzer system (ten dollar discount). Please make checks payable to De Smet Jesuit High School.
“The Brainstorm at the Lake,” MACA’s annual conference, hit the Inn at Grand Glaize in Osage Beach on September 26-27, and was declared a success. The day featured a variety of breakout sessions, a “new” president in the morning, and an election of a vice-president in the afternoon. Coach of the Year awards went to four top coaches, and member-emeritus Troy Kinast won the Carol Farmer Founders Award. One karma-charmed member won a new ZeeCraft buzzer system, donated by the ZeeCraft people.
Stacy Schroeder, Associate Executive Director of the Missouri State High School Activities Association, has announced that the MSHSAA has moved the date that the Scholar Bowl online rules review becomes available from the originally scheduled date of Friday, October 1 to Monday, October 4. The rulebook packets are being shipped on Wednesday, September 29 and people really need to have the rulebook in hand before they do the rules review. MSHSAA anticipates that more coaches will have them in hand if they post the review on Monday.
