The Missouri Academic Coaches Association (MACA) is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the third annual Middle School State Academic Tournament on March 17th at Hallsville High School. This tournament is open to teams of 7th and 8th grade students.

Games will consist of 20 tossups worth ten points each, followed by three-part bonuses worth up to thirty points. Tossups will include powers (extra points for answering a tossup early). The question set for the tournament will be NAQT MS #26.

We will host a junior varsity/novice division and a middle school/junior high division. Middle school/junior high programs must be properly registered with MSHSAA in order to participate. There will be no roster restrictions for the MS/JH division; the JV division will have a roster restriction:
All freshmen may compete. NO seniors may compete.
Sophomores who have not competed at HSNCT, SSNCT or PACE NSC may compete.
Juniors who have not previously competed at any 20/20 tournament may compete.

Question Format
This will be a sixteen-team tournament for 7th and 8th grade students only. Teams must have a minimum of four players and a maximum of eight. Schools may bring a maximum of two teams if they choose, but team members are not interchangeable once morning play has begun. Every team will play six games. The first three games will be “pool play” with schools paired randomly. The results will then be used to seed two double elimination brackets for the remainder of the tournament.

Teams placing 1st through 3rd will receive a trophy. The top ten players overall will receive a medal award. The members of every participating team shall receive a certificate of participation.

There will be a middle school division (7th/8th grade teams from MSHSAA-affiliated schools) and one for students in the sixth grade or below. Rosters shall be limited to 8 players and we request that you limit teams to six players so as to maximize playing time for all students.

We will have trophies for 1st-3rd place teams and medals for individual students who make all-tournament team honors.

Tuscumbia High School will hosting an academic tournament on Saturday, January 17, 2015 with both JV and middle school divisions. Tentatively, the JV division will be capped at eighteen teams, and the middle school division will be capped at twelve. All students in grades 7 and 8 are eligible to compete in the middle school division; all students in grades 9 and 10 are eligible for the JV division, regardless of previous experience. The limit on team size in both divisions is eight, although teams of six or fewer students are encouraged. Other than the field limit, there is a not a limit on the number of teams that an individual school can bring.

Oakville is using the same question set for their tournament on November 1. If you are planning on attending the Oakville tournament, you may not attend this tournament.
